Portrait of 1694 Private (Pte) John Gilbert Jacob, 50th Battalion from Kensington Gardens, South Australia. A 20 year old student prior to enlisting on 9 March 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 2nd Reinforcements of the 50th Battalion from Adelaide on 11 April 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas. Following further training in England, he joined the 50th Battalion in France on 19 August 1916 and was accidentally wounded on 4 September 1916. After being evacuated to England for medical treatment, he rejoined the 50th Battalion in France three months later. On 3 April 1917 he was wounded in action and again evacuated to England for medical treatment. On his recovery, Pte Jacob rejoined the 50th Battalion in November 1917, was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux, France on 17 July 1918 and buried in the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Fouilloy, France.
