Description

Section of a group portrait of members of the 50th Battalion, AIF. Seated in the centre front is 1612 Temporary Sergeant (T/Sgt) John Ross Manthorpe from Unley, South Australia. A 22 year old clerk prior to enlisting on 22 November 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private with the 2nd Reinforcements of the 50th Battalion from Adelaide on 11 April 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas. While undergoing training in Egypt, he was promoted to Corporal on 21 May 1916. Following further training in England and France, he joined the 50th Battalion on 14 December 1916. He was promoted to Temporary Sergeant on 13 March 1917 and was then killed in action at Noreuil, France on 2 April 1917. T/Sgt Manthorpe is buried in the Noreuil Australian Cemetery, France.
