Description

Studio portrait of 142 Trooper (Tpr) Arthur Alfred Johns, 9th Light Horse Regiment, of Henley Beach, SA. A butcher prior to enlisting in October 1914, Tpr Johns embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Armadale (A26) on 12 February 1915. On 11 October 1918 he died of disease (intestinal toxaemia) at the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance which was camped at Kaukab near Damascus. His service file records he was buried 350 yards from the road with the service officiated by Chaplain R H Moore on 12 October. Tpr Johns was 32 years of age. A map reference was recorded, but post war his grave was not located and his name is recorded on the Jerusalem Memorial.
