Studio portrait of 4993 Private (Pte) Eric Arthur Ernest Coleman, 20th Battalion, of Smithfield, NSW. A railway clerk prior to enlisting in January 1916, Pte Coleman embarked from Sydney with the 13th Reinforcements on board HMAT Ajana (A31) on 5 July 1916. He arrived in France for service on the Western Front in October 1916 and was transferred to the 1st Battalion on 10 November. Pte Coleman, aged, 24, was killed in action at Bullecourt, France, between 5 and 8 August 1917. The exact date of his death is unknown. A brother of Pte Coleman, 6060 Pte Frank Albert Coleman, 22nd Battalion, was killed in action in Belgium on 18 September 1917, aged 22.
