Studio portrait of 946 Trooper (Tpr) Sydney Ellis Clare Johnson, 1st Light Horse Regiment, of Little Plain, NSW. A labourer prior to enlisting in January 1915, Tpr Johnson embarked from Newcastle with the 5th Reinforcements on board HMAT Bakara (A41) on 22 May 1915. He served at Gallipoli and in Palestine and was promoted to Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) in February 1917. L/Cpl Johnson was killed in action at Tel el Khuweilfeh, Palestine, on 3 November 1917. He was 29 years of age.
