Studio portrait of 4061 Private (Pte) George John Beddows, 17th Battalion, of Sydney, NSW; formerly of Tavenni, Fiji. He worked with his father on a coconut plantation prior to enlisting in November 1915. Pte Beddows, and his brother 4060 Pte Arthur Henry Beddows, also 17th Battalion, embarked from Sydney with the 10th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Star of England (A15) on 8 March 1916. George Beddows, promoted Corporal (Cpl) was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux, France, on 18 July 1918, aged 25. His brother Arthur Beddows was killed in action at Bullecourt, France, on 3 May 1917.
