Studio portrait of 1043 Private (Pte) Alfred James Hinchley, 1st Light Trench Mortar Battery, of Narrandera, NSW. A blacksmith prior to enlistment, he embarked from Sydney, NSW on board HMAT Euripides (A14) on 9 September 1916. Pte Hinchley served on the Western Front. He transferred to the 1st Battalion in February 1917. On the 6 May the same year Pte Hinchley was wounded in action; he was admitted to the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station and died from these wounds a few hours later. He was 23 years of age.
