Description

Digital manuscript, 'Lionel Hobbins in the Royal Australian Air Force 1938-46', by Peter Hobbins. The manuscript, which includes photographs, is an account of the service of Lionel George Thomas Hobbins (3455, Warrant Officer) in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Printed copies are provided for ease of access.

Hobbins applied to join the RAAF on 29 April 1938, and entered on 6 June. He trained at Laverton, and his initial posting was in 1 Squadron. During the Second World War he served at RAAF Headquarters Canberra, in 8 Squadron RAAF, 1 Recruit Depot Shepparton, 8 Operational Training Unit, and 1 Flying Boat Repair Depot Lake Boga. He was stationed in Singapore and Malaya, and was evacuated from Batavia after the Japanese advance in February 1942. In June 1941 he suffered injuries from personal assault by British personnel, and suffered medical problems for the remainder of his service and life. He was given a medical discharge on 26 March 1946.
