Description

Studio portrait of an Australian soldier identified as 'Ted Fleming', probably 3834 Private (Pte) Edward Sandilands Fleming, 17th Battalion, of Redfern, Sydney. A storekeeper prior to enlistment he embarked from Sydney on HMAT Runic (A54) on 20 January 1916. He was killed in action, probably at Poelcappelle, on 9 October 1917. He was buried in the vicinity of Broodseinde, but the location of his grave was lost in subsequent fighting. His name is recorded on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
