A Wireless Section of Greece and Crete (Hill, William Charles Fitzmaurice; VX19513, Major)
Unpublished memoir, 'A wireless section of Greece and Crete', written by William Charles Fitzmaurice Hill (VX19513; Major; Royal Australian Corps of Signals), September 1964. The memoir details Hill's service as part of the 4 Australian Special Wireless Section in Greece and Crete during the Second World War. It was completed with the aid of Hill's diaries and letters, and features excerpts from those throughout. Hill discusses the history and role of the Special Wireless Section and includes a personal description of actions in, and the evacuation of Greece in April 1941 and of Crete in May 1941. John William Ryan (VX19521; Captain, later Lieutenant Colonel) commander of the Special Wireless Section also features prominently in the memoir.
The role of 4 Australian Special Wireless Section was to obtain intelligence of enemy tactics, strategy and intentions by intercepting and studying wireless traffic from enemy units, with the view of locating positions, observing reinforcements or withdrawals.
