Studio portrait of 1926 Private (Pte) Edward Leonard (Len) Burley, 60th Battalion, of Kempsey, NSW. A railway storeman prior to enlisting in January 1916, Pte Burley embarked from Melbourne with the 3rd Reinforcements aboard HMAT Port Lincoln (A17) on 4 May 1916. They arrived in France in August 1916 and Pte Burley was transferred to the 57th Battalion on 10 September 1916. He was wounded in action at Warfusee near Villers Bretonneux, France, on 8 August 1918. He managed to walk unassisted some distance toward the nearby dressing station, but died of his wounds on the morning of 10 August 1918 at a casualty clearing station at Vignacourt. Pte Burley was 28 years of age.
