Studio portrait of 12206 Gunner (Gnr) Roland McDonald, 6th Field Artillery Brigade, of Port Augusta, SA. A grocer prior to enlisting in September 1915, Gnr McDonald embarked from Melbourne with the 3rd Reinforcements aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 28 January 1916. After further training in Egypt he was transferred to the 105th Howitzer Battery, 5th Field Artillery Brigade, and arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 25 March 1916. Gnr McDonald was wounded in action in France on 18 September 1918 during the first Australian attack on the Hindenburg Line. He died of his wounds on 20 September 1918. Gnr McDonald was 27 years of age.
