Studio portrait of 479 Bombadier (later Sergeant) Edward Walpole Lewin, 1st Field Artillery Brigade (later 2nd Field Artillery Brigade) of Paddington, NSW. A French polisher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Pera (A4) on 26 September 1914. He was killed in action, on 22 August 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres, Belgium, aged 23. He is buried in the Reninghelst New Military Cemetery, Belgium
