Studio portrait of 4139A Private Hendrick John Bongers, 1st (later 45th) Battalion of Auburn, NSW. A fitter prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 20 December 1915. He was killed in action at Pozieres, France on 12 August 1916, aged 19. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
