Studio portrait of 3456A Private Charles Gapes, 1st Pioneer Battalion of Granville, NSW. A carter prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Beltana (A72) on 25 November 1916. He was killed in action on 20 September 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres, Belgium, aged 20. He is buried in the Belgian Battery Corner Cemetery, Belgium.
