Studio portrait of 5404 Corporal (Cpl) Herbert Harold Lewis, farm labourer, of Donald, Victoria. He enlisted as a Private (Pte) in the 14th Battalion on 7 February 1916 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides for Egypt. He relocated to England in June 1916 and then to the Western Front in France on 2 August 1916. Pte Lewis was wounded in action on 25 January 1917 and evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation. He rejoined his unit in July 1917 and was promoted to Lance Corporal the same month and then to Corporal on 29 October 1917. In December 1917 he was evacuated to England due to illness and following recovery underwent training before rejoining his battalion on 15 June 1918. Cpl Lewis was killed in action near Villers Bretonneux on 1 August 1918. He was aged 29 years.
