Description

Studio portrait of 1859 Private (Pte) Alfred Hamilton, farm labourer, of Donald, Victoria. He enlisted in the 8th Battalion on 21 April 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Wandilla on 17 June 1915 for Gallipoli. The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during March 1916. Pte Hamilton was wounded in action for the first time on 28 May 1916 and returned to duty on 10 June 1916. He was wounded in action a second time near Pozieres, France, on 27 July 1916 and was evacuated to No 1 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, France. Pte Hamilton died of wounds received on 12 August 1916, aged 19 years. This image is one from a poster produced at Donald, Victoria, commemorating the deaths of soldiers associated with Donald and surrounding district during the First World War.
