Studio portrait of 11065 Aircraftman (later Sergeant) Phillip Mervyn Benison, 10 Squadron RAAF, of Preston, Vic; an engineer prior to enlisting in July 1940. No. 10 Squadron RAAF was stationed in Wales and then Plymouth, England. It conducted 'locate and destroy' missions against German submarines and conducted air-sea rescues. Sergeant Benison and seven other crew members of Sunderland flying boat W3999 were lost at sea during an air-sea rescue from Mount Batten, Plymouth, on 21 June 1942. Sergeant Benison was 30 years of age.
