Description
Studio portrait of 2175 Private (Pte) George Henry Taylor, 47th Battalion, of Newcastle, NSW. He was employed as a tram cleaner by the NSW Tramways prior to enlisting in September 1915. Pte Taylor embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Melbourne onboard HMAT Ballarat (A70) on 18 February 1916. They arrived for further training in Palestine in April but Pte Taylor was soon after admitted to hospital with bronchitis. He was also diagnosed with hammer toe and, being unable to march, did not join his unit in France until 29 September. On 14 November 1916 Pte Taylor was killed in action by a shell explosion at Fleurs, France. He was 19 years of age.
