McCrory, Norbert Joseph (Leading Stoker, 1892-1944)
Research by Commander Greg Swinden about Leading Stoker Norbert Joseph McCrory (1892-1944). McCrory joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) as an Officers Steward in 1911 and purchased his discharge from the Navy in 1912. When WWI broke out, he enlisted at the Naval Depot 1915. He also served as a Bombardier when he was transferred into the 1st AIF in England and France before being transferred to the RAN in 1917 on HMAS Australia. He was one of 11 men selected to raid the German port of Zeebrugge in April 1918. McCrory was Mentioned in Despatches for his bravery during the attack. He was awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre in 1921 for this action. He continued to serve with the RAN after the war and was discharged in 1922 with the rank of Leading Stoker.
