Studio portrait of 2693 Private (Pte) Murray Vincent Freeman, 12th Battalion, of Colebrook, Tas. Pte Freeman, a labourer prior to enlisting in July 1915, embarked from Melbourne with the 8th Reinforcements on board SS Makarini on 10 September 1915. The reinforcements arrived in Egypt in December 1915 and Pte Freeman was hospitalised with bronchitis. He rejoined the 12th Battalion in Tel-el-Kebir on 8 January 1916. In March Pte Freeman and many other members of the 12th Battalion were transferred to the newly formed 52nd Battalion. In June Pte Freeman and the 52nd Battalion were sent to England for further training prior to service on the Western Front. They arrived in France on 13 December 1916. Pte Freeman was killed in action on the Somme on 28 March 1917. He was 24 years of age.
