Description

Studio portrait of VX25756 Private (Pte) Robert Henderson Taylor, 2/24 Battalion, of Wentworth, NSW. Pte Henderson was a general station hand prior to enlisting in June 1940. He trained initially with the No. 2 Training Battalion and the Australian Army Medical Corps, and in December 1940 he was transferred to the 2/24 Battalion. He arrived for service in the Middle East in March 1941 as the 2/24 Battalion became part of the 26th Brigade. Pte Taylor, after several brief terms as an Acting Corporal, was appointed Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) in June 1942. He was reported missing on 22 July 1942 during the brigade's advance to Tel el Eisa, Egypt. In August 1943 it was learnt that he had been captured and interned in a hospital in Athens, recovering from a gun shot wound and wounds to his head caused by shell splinters. He was then interned as a prisoner of war in Stalag 7A in Moosburg, Bavaria. In November 1943 he arrived in Egypt as part of a prisoner of war exchange, however, the wounds to his head had resulted in serious infection and he died on 7 November 1943. L/Cpl Taylor was 26 years of age.
