Studio portrait of 6592 Private (Pte) William (Bill) Mitchell (left), 18th Battalion, of Wagga Wagga, NSW (previously of Glasgow, Scotland), and an unidentified soldier. Pte Mitchell was in the British Merchant Navy before his arrival in Australia. A labourer in Australia prior to enlistment, Pte Mitchell embarked with the 19th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Wiltshire on 7 February 1917. On 19 May 1918 he was killed in action in France, aged 19.
