Studio portrait of QX1223 Private (Pte) Thomas Martin McKean, 2/9th Infantry Battalion, of Oakey, Qld. Private McKean was a miner prior to enlisting with his brother QX1218 Pte John McKean, also 2/9 Battalion, on 3 November 1939. Both served in North Africa. Pte Thomas McKean died in Egypt on 21 March 1941 of wounds received in action. He was 22 years of age. Pte John McKean was killed in action in Papua on 3 September 1942. A third brother, 429377 Flying Officer George McKean, RAAF, won the Distinguished Flying Cross and was discharged in June 1948.
