Description

Collection relating to the United Nations Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG) service of 226811 Captain (later Major General) Craig William Orme, Australian Service Contingent, Iran, 1989.

Wallet 1 of 1 - Collection consists of a typed diary maintained by Orme during his deployment as a Military Observer with the Second Australian Contingent to UNIIMOG from February to October 1989. The diary contains often detailed and almost daily entries between 18 February and 19 September 1989. Orme writes of the journey to Tehran via India, his living conditions, the political situation, his interactions with and perceptions of diplomatic staff and other Military Observers, his work and patrols in the Ahwaz sector, investigating cease fire violations and an artillery firing incident at Khorramshar, recreational activities (including sport and reading), relations with Iranians, uncertainty regarding the length of the Australians' tour, and changes in the weather. He also reflects on the role (and performance) of United Nations peacekeeping operations, and discusses land mine incidents, tensions between the contingent staff in Tehran and those working in the operational sectors, as well as his future postings and career prospects in the Australian Army.
