Studio portrait of 4740 Private (Pte) Archibald James Bower, 8th Battalion, of Glenaladale, Vic. A labourer prior to enlisting in November 1915, Pte Bower embarked from Melbourne, with the 13th to 23rd Reinforcement, on board HMAT Wiltshire (A18) on 7 March 1916. They arrived in France on 7 August 1916 to serve on the Somme. Pte Bower was killed in action at the Pozieres windmill during the Battle of Mouquet Farm on 18 August 1916. He was 21 years of age. Pte Bower's elder brother, 5343 Pte Charles Robert Bower, also served with the 8th Battalion. He returned to Australia on 19 February 1919.
