Fundraising badge : Official Peace Button, R.S.A. Funds
Circular pressed tinplate badge with a celluloid face and a pin attachment to the reverse. A green wreath encloses an image of the world with the British Empire marked in red; a dove hovers above. Accompanied by the words 'Official Peace Button, R.S.A. Funds. Signed June 28, 1919'. The date appears in a scroll.
Fundraising badge produced to commemorate the signing of the Peace Agreement of June 1919, produced for the Returned Soldier's Association. Such badges were sold in trams, buses, at railways stations and at rallies to raise money for the stated cause. This example is associated with the official Peace Treaty of 28 June 1919, signed at Versailles, France; ratifying and expanding the Armistice of November 11 1918. The Returned Soldier's Association of South Australia and their associated building appeal raised 36,385 pounds during the war to assist in the housing and care of returned soldiers.
