Description
Circular pressed tinplate badge with a celluloid face and a pin attachment to the reverse. The centre of a Union Jack appears in the middle of the badge, surrounded by an illustration of a lifebuoy. The words 'Merchant Service 20th April 1917' appear on the face of the lifebuoy. A star and a dove of peace sit either side of the date.
History / Summary
Fundraising badge produced to promote the work of the Merchant Service. Such badges were sold in trams, buses, at railways stations and at rallies to raise money for the stated cause. This example is associated with the Merchant Navy Service.
