A Turkish prisoner
Sketchbook containing 56 pages of drawings from his service during the First World War
- Scrapbook leaf with four sketches and inscriptions; verso: Suvla Bay
Description
Sketch on a leaf torn from a small sketchpad, depicting a head study of a Turkish prisoner. The inscription reads: 'A Turkish prisoner who was being examined on the HQ's troopship'. Benson has also indicated that the prisoner's fez hat was green. An additional inscription suggests conflicting attitudes towards the Turkish: 'Our friend, the enemy'. This is one of a series of sketches Benson made while aboard the SS Minnewaska, travelling from Alexandria to Lemnos Island on Easter Saturday, 1915.
