Group portrait of No 2 Squad, No 2 School of Instruction 1916-1917. Identified centre front is Staff Sergeant Major Douglas, instructor, and front right, 2277 (2277B) Private (Pte) James Wright, 12th Battalion of Deddington, Tasmania. Pte Wright was also a veteran of the Boer War, serving with the 1st Tasmanian Contingent. Following his enlistment Pte Wright embarked with the 4th Reinforcements, 40th Battalion, for service from Melbourne on HMAT Port Melbourne. On arrival in England he joined the 10th Training Battalion at Durrington. He left for the Western Front on 22 May 1917 and was assigned to the 12th Battalion with the number 2277B. Pte Wright was killed in action on 6 October 1917 in Belgium. He was aged 44 years.
