Description
Studio portrait of TX2214 Private (Pte) James Henry Robert Smith, C Company, 2/3 Machine Gun (MG) Battalion, of Fern Tree, Tas. A special constable in civilian life, Pte Smith enlisted initially in 2/2 Machine Gun Battalion on 5 June 1940. Soon after he transferred to 2/3 MG Battalion. After training at Woodside camp in South Australia he served in the Middle East where he was promoted to the acting corporal. His battalion then served in Java where he was reported presumed missing on 7 March 1942. Acting Corporal Smith had become a prisoner of war of the Japanese and worked on the Burma Thailand Railway. He died of cholera at the Hintok Mountain camp, Thailand, on 19 July 1943, aged 34.
