Studio portrait of 5343 Private (Pte) Ralph Arthur Hunt, 26th Battalion. A farrier prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 14th Reinforcements from Brisbane aboard HMAT Itonus on 8 August 1916. While serving in France, Pte Hunt received accidental gunshot wounds on 23 June and was transported to hospital where he died on on 24 June 1917, aged 25. He was buried at Grevillers British Cemetery, France. In July 1917 his mother Alice wrote to Base Records seeking his personal effects, particulars of the accident and his dying words, her letter ending with "please do what you can for his poor heart-broken mother".
