Description
Studio portrait of brothers, 3937 Private (Pte) Edwin James Barnes (seated), and 3936 Pte Albert William Barnes (standing), both of 31st Battalion. Formerly dairy farmers from Jimboola, Qld, the brothers enlisted together on 19 April 1916 and as members of the 9th Reinforcements, they embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAT Seang Choon (A49) on 19 September 1916. They served on the Western Front in France where Edwin was killed in action on 23 February 1917, aged 19 years. Albert survived the war and returned to Australia on 19 October 1918.
