Description
Studio portrait of 6533 Private, later Corporal (Cpl) Charles Heather, 13th Battalion, of Holbrook, NSW. A carpenter before enlisting in June 1916, Cpl Heather left Australia for England with the 21st Reinforcements in October 1916 and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in December 1916. Cpl Heather was killed by German machine-gun fire at Hebuterne, France, on 26 March 1918. He was buried at Hebuterne Cemetery but the location was subsequently lost. Aged 26 at the time of his death, Cpl Heather has no known grave.
The card and handwritten details on the second image indicate it was created for the Crown Studios 1918 project to copy portraits of NSW soldiers for the Mitchell Library in Sydney, NSW.
