Outdoor portrait of 736 Private (Pte) Herbert Thomas Harris, 3rd Battalion, of Copeland, NSW. A clerk and member of the 14th Battalion Senior Cadets before enlisting in August 1914, Pte Harris left Australia for Egypt in October 1914 and took part in the landing at Gallipoli on the morning of 25 April 1915. He was wounded during the Turkish attacks opposite Jolly and Wire Gully on 19 May 1915, and was later evacuated to Egypt with influenza. After rejoining the battalion in December 1915, Pte Harris was promoted to Corporal (Cpl) and embarked for France for service on the Western Front the following in March 1916. After suffering a second bout of influenza which put him in hospital for two months, Cpl Harris rejoined his battalion in June 1916. He was killed in action at Pozieres less than a month later on 20 July 1916. Aged 21 at the time of his death, he has no known grave. Cpl Harris is the younger brother of 3090 Lance Corporal Stanley Harold Harris, 3rd Battalion, who was killed in action during the Second Battle of Bullecourt on 5 May 1917 (See P07760.001).
