Studio portrait of 4219 Temporary Corporal (T/Cpl) Norman Basil Maxwell, 10th Battalion, of Saddleworth, SA. A farmer before enlisting in August 1915, T/Cpl Maxwell left Australia for Egypt with the 13th Reinforcements in January 1916. After transferring to the 50th Battalion as part of the 'doubling-up' of the AIF in February 1916, he again transferred to the 11th Field Artillery Brigade with the rank of Gunner (Gnr). He arrived in France for service on the Western Front in June 1916, and was promoted to Bombardier (Bdr) in July. He was admitted to the 36 Casualty Clearing Station at Rouen with appendicitis on 7 December 1916 where he died two and half weeks later, aged 22. His older brother, 2216 Edgar Albert Maxwell, 50th Battalion, was killed in action at Noreuil on 2 April 1917, aged 25 (See P07739.002).
