Studio portrait of 5106 Private (Pte) John Grayland, 14th Battalion AIF. Pte Grayland, a farmer from Macarthur Vic, enlisted on 31 January 1916 and was killed in action at Pozieres, France, on 7 August 1916. His body was never recovered and he is commemorated on the Australian War Memorial at Villers Bretonneux, France. His older brother, 4110 Pte Leslie George Grayland, 24th Battalion AIF, died of wounds in England on 28 September 1916 and is buried in the Portsdown (Christ Church) Military Cemetery at Hampshire.
