Studio portrait of 3825 Private (Pte) Edwin John Haines, 30th Battalion, of Sydney, NSW. Formerly a wardsman, Pte Haines enlisted on 6 May 1916 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Anchises (A68) on 24 August 1916. He served on the Western Front where he was killed in action during the assault on Passchendaele ridge as part of the Third Battle of Ypres on 13 October 1917. He was aged 25.
