Studio portrait of 6388 Private (Pte) William (Andrew) Madden, who enlisted under the name William Lake, 15th Battalion, of Gympie, Qld. An apprentice printer's labourer prior to enlistment, Pte Madden embarked on board HMAT Clan MacGillivray (A46) on 7 September 1916. He was killed in action at Pozieres, France, on 11 April 1917, aged 30. Pte Madden was one of four brothers from Gympie Qld,who served in the First World War: 2515 Pte Stephen Madden, 11th Battalion, was killed in action on 22 July, aged 37; 3468 Pte James Joseph Madden, 48th Battalion, and 3379 Pte William John Madden, 47th Battalion. Willliam died in 1923, aged 28, and James the following year, aged 39.
