Description

Outdoor studio portrait of 97 Private, later Driver (Dvr) James Sydney John Parsissons, 40th Battalion, of Hamilton, Tas, at Claremont training camp. A farm hand before enlisting in February 1916, Dvr Parsissons left Australia for England with the 40th Battalion machine gun section in July 1916, and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in March 1917. Dvr Parissons was gassed at Ploegsteert Wood, Belgium, in July 1917 and was evacuated to England where he recovered from the effects of gas poisoning. Returning to the battalion at Seninghem, France, in March 1918, he was later killed by German counter-battery artillery fire at Hamel on 11 August 1918, aged 24. Note that Dvr Parsissons is wearing the blue dungaree uniform issued to volunteers on arrival to training camp, and is holding an early model .303 rifle.
