Studio portrait of 490 Private (Pte) Ernest Erle Rankins, 21st Battalion, of Eldorado, Vic. A bushman prior to enlistment, Pte Rankins embarked on board HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 10 May 1915. He served at Gallipoli and in France and was promoted to corporal in July 1916. On 25 February 1917 Cpl Rankins, aged 23, was killed in action at Le Sars, France.
