Studio portrait of 6102 Private (Pte) Herbert Andrew Heron, 27th Battalion, of West Hindmarsh, SA. A baker before enlisting in October 1916, Pte Heron left Australia for England with the 17th Reinforcements, and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in April 1917. He was severely gassed whilst in the line near Villers Bretonneux on 17 July 1918 and admitted to the 49th Casualty Clearing Station at St Riquier where he died a week later, aged 23.
