Studio portrait of Private (Pte) Lewis John Broad (left) and Pte William Richard (Will) Beckett, 11th Battalion, both of Mingenew, WA. Pte Broad was a farm hand and Pte Beckett a station hand when they enlisted. They embarked with the 17th Reinforcements from Fremantle on HMAT Aeneas on 17 April 1916. On 13 November 1916 Pte Beckett died of wounds in France, aged 32. On 20 September 1917 Pte Broad was killed in action at Ypres, Belgium, aged 23.
