Studio portrait of 4300 Corporal (Cpl) Arthur Roy Halgren, 2nd Battalion, of Croydon, NSW. A clerk with service in the Citizens Military Forces (CMF) before enlisting in October 1915, Cpl Halgren left Australia for Egypt with the 13th Reinforcements in December 1915. He was transferred to the 54th Battalion as part of the 'doubling-up' of the AIF in February 1916, and reverted to the rank of Private (Pte) on arriving in France for service on the Western Front in September 1916. He was wounded during the 54th Battalion's participation in the Second Battle of Bullecourt in May 1917, and was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal (LCpl) in June 1917. LCpl Halgren was wounded in the legs by a German anti-tank round during the joint Australian-American attack on the Hindenburg Line at Bellicourt on 29th September 1918. He was evacuated to the 53rd Casualty Clearing Station at Tincourt where he died of his wounds on 1 October 1918, aged 24.
