Outdoor portrait of SX2715 Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Lewis Luxton, from Medindie, South Australia who was a 29 year old assistant manager of Shell Australia when he joined the Army on 12 May 1940. He sailed for the Middle East in October 1940 and served in Egypt, Greece, Crete and Syria returning to Australia on 16 March 1942. Later he went to New Guinea and from September 1944 until April 1945 he rendered very valuable service in planning for the Lae, Salamaua, Huon Peninsula and Ramu Valley campaigns. He was Mentioned in Despatches for exceptional services in the field in New Guinea and received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for highly meritorious service in the Middle East and New Guinea. Lt Col Luxton was serving with the Australian Army Service Corps when he was demobilised on 1 November 1945. One of 86 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the Second World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
