Studio portrait of 29921 Gunner Nelson Lavercomb Bowen, 120th Howitzer Battery, Australian Field Artillery who was a 34 year old accountant from Adelaide, South Australia when he enlisted on 17 January 1916. He embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 3 October 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas. Gunner Bowen joined the 102nd Battery in France on 31 March 1917 and saw fighting in France and Belgium before being medically evacuated to England. He died of pneumonia on 16 November 1918 in the Monte Video Hospital, Weymouth, England, and was buried in the Melcombe Regis Cemetery, Weymouth. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
