Studio portrait of J. F. Doswell, probably 2148 Corporal (Cpl) Frederick John Doswell, 48th Battalion who was a 33 year old insurance clerk from Adelaide, South Australia, when he enlisted on 3 April 1916. After embarking for overseas with the 4th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 12 August 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat, he saw service on the Western Front where he was wounded near Ypres, Belgium on 27 September 1917. Following evacuation to England for medical treatment, he rejoined the 48th Battalion in France on 18 July 1918. Cpl Doswell was wounded again on 18 September 1918 at Flechin, France, and died of wounds in the Australian Section, 2nd General Hospital, Havre, France, on 24 September 1918. He is buried in Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, France. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
