Hand coloured studio portrait of 1737 Private (Pte) William John O'Day, 59th Battalion, of Panton Hill Vic. A labourer before enlisting in February 1916, Pte O'Day left Australia for Egypt with the 2nd Reinforcement and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in June 1916. Pte O'Day was killed during the battalion's attack on German positions at Fromelles on the night of 19/20th July 1916, aged 19, and has no known grave.
