Studio portrait of 67 Staff Sergeant Major (Sgt Maj) Andrew Ernest Ralph Barnfather (Ralph), 29th Light Horse, of Bareema Vic. A carpenter prior to enlistment, Sgt Maj Barnfather embarked on 19 October 1914 and served with the 4th Light Horse Regiment on Gallipoli and France. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) with the 58th Battalion on 23 March 1916. 2nd Lt Barnfather was killed in action on 19 July 1916 while leading an attack on a German trench at Fleurbaix near Armentieres. He was 25 years of age.
