Description

Studio portrait of 2275 Private Clarence Arthur Laurie, 48th Battalion, of Parkside, SA. He is wearing the earlier, rectangular version of the 48th Battalion colour patch. Pte Laurie, a blacksmith before enlisting on 30 December 1915, embarked from Adelaide on the RMS Mongolia on 9 March 1916 with the 4th Reinforcements, 32nd Battalion. On 19 April 1916 he was taken on strength of the 48th Battalion. On 14 August 1916, while in France, he was wounded in the arm and evacuated to England, receiving treatment at the 3rd Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, before rejoining his unit in France on 5 January 1917. He was killed in action at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917, at the age of 23. He has no known grave.
